Ben McKelvey interview

Music Promotions recently sat down for a chat with Ben about his new music, performing live and summer plans plus much more please see the full interview below.

What is the story behind Stronger?

It’s about keeping your head up through tough times. I’d had a tough week in the music industry getting let down by the powers that be when I wrote it. It was inspired by some of Springsteen’s later songs. I was in my flat in Brighton and needed to let off some steam so I went boxing. By the time I had walked down the beach and got to the gym I had written the song in my head. Then I had to ask for a piece of paper so I didn’t forget the lyrics!

Will there be a new album to follow?

There will be a brand new EP coming out in Autumn which I am very excited about.

Who inspires you as a songwriter?

Mostly the greats like Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteenbut in more recent years songwriter’s like Frank Turner and Brian Fallon have had a huge influence on me.

You have toured with everyone from Mike & The Mechanics to Marti Pellow and Scouting for Girls, what was touring with them like?

I’ve been fortunate enough to tour with great bands but more importantly nice guys. When you are on a tour bus for weeks on end it’s important to get along with everyone. It feels like you are the new kid at school when you first join a tour on your own and they all made me feel very welcome.

How was performing at iconic venues like The Royal Albert Hall, London Palladium and the O2 Arena?

A bit of a blur most of the time to be honest. Weirdly enough I found it almost hit me a few days later rather than on the night. I’d wake up in a different town on tour and be like ‘wow, I played the Royal Albert Hall the other night’.

What have been your career highlights so far?

There’s been a lot of great moments. Touring through Europe with Mike + The Mechanics was an incredible adventure. Releasing albums has been so rewarding and just meeting so many people out on the road has been great.

You have two headline shows coming up in November at London at the O2 Islington Academy2 and in Manchester at Gulliver’s, can you tell us a little about what we can expect?

These are the first shows I’ve ever done with a full band. We are already planning our set lists and are very excited to bring these songs to London and Manchester. We’ll also be filming them both for a music video to make the shows extra special for the fans.

Have you any plans to do a full uk tour?

Absolutely. I’d like to do an acoustic tour and a full band tour in 2020. Currently figuring out some logistics but that’s the plan.

What are your plans over the summer? any summer festivals and any tour support’s coming up?

We are on the main stage at Pennfest this year which is such an honour. To be playing alongside Suede, Pete Doherty and Miles Kane is amazing. We are also on tour supporting Jake Clemons from Springsteen’s E Street Bandthis October round the UK.
