Hi Juliet, For anybody who may not know who you are can you
introduce your self?

Hi! Thanks so much for having me. My name is Juliet Lloyd, and I’m a
singer/songwriter from Boston, MA. My music is kind of a mix of pop,
jazz, and soul – similar to a cross between Alicia Keys and Norah
Jones.

• Have you got an album in the pipeline?

Yes! I’m really excited. My debut album will be released in late
March/early April of this year. I write all of my songs myself, and
I’m in the process of writing and recording for the album right now.

• How many tracks have you completed so far? have you been working on
any more tracks with Dave Lawrence?

The tracks that I finished with Dave are demos – the songs will be on
the album, but I’m going to re-work them a little. Since I moved to
Boston last year, I haven’t been able to work with Dave again, but I’d
like to because he’s incredibly talented!

• Will you be releasing "Before Me" into the mainstream charts?

I’m actually not sure yet which songs will be released as singles. I
want to wait and see what the final cuts sound like, since right now
most of them are just rough piano/vocal demos. Once all the other
instruments and production are added I’ll make a decision.

• "Before Me" was received as an honourable mention in the 12th
annual Billboard World Song Contest, what was your reaction when you
found out?

I was really excited! It was really nice to get that recognition for my
songwriting, especially considering “Before Me” was my very first
attempt at ever writing a song.

• What was the inspiration behind Before Me?

Well, it’s about feeling jealous of your boyfriend or girlfriend’s past
relationships – you know, that part of their past that you know nothing
about and secretly you wonder how you compare. I think everyone feels
this at one point or another – I know I have!

• You have a varied musical background with training in both classical
and Jazz is this a good indication of your musical style and sound?

I think it is. I definitely incorporate a lot of my background in jazz
into my writing and playing, and I think the classical training really
adds to my fundamental playing abilities and my understanding of music
in general.

• How did your solo showcase at the 2004 Dewey Beach Music Conference
& Festival go? what was the crowds reaction towards your music?

It went really well! I actually debuted a lot of my newer material
there, and I was really happy with the response. I was different than
a lot of the other acts there because it was mostly rock bands, and I
was there singing and playing my pop/jazz/soul songs on the piano. The
crowd seemed to enjoy the contrast, though, so I was pleased!

• Do you play piano and trumpet as part of your live set? Can you play
any other instruments?

I always accompany myself on the piano during my live gigs. I haven’t
played the trumpet yet – maybe once I start to play with a band, I
won’t have to be stuck behind the piano all the time and I can play the
trumpet a little! I do plan on playing it on my album on a couple of
tunes, though.

• What is your live set like?

I’ve been doing all solo shows lately, which is nice because I only
have to worry about my own schedule and stuff. I play all of my own
songs, but I usually throw in a cover song or two just to break up the
mood and give the audience something to sing along with. I try to keep
it varied – fast, slow, etc. – and I always try to come up with new
things to do vocally so that no performance is ever the same. I’m
really proud of my live sound, especially when so many artists
lip-synch nowadays.

• How long do you spend rehearsing before performing live for the
first time?

I try to practice all of my tunes every day, at least for a little
while, just to keep them fresh in my mind and fingers. With new songs,
I run through them so many times while I’m writing them that it’s not
too much of a big deal to play them live for the first time.

• Have you started rehearsing for your shows in Cambridge, Boston,
Somerville and Newport? How many tracks will you be performing? Do you
get nervous before a live show? (Goodluck)

I have! I’m really looking forward to all of these gigs. Depending on
the show, I might be playing anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour, so
I’ll be doing anywhere from 9 to 12 songs or so. I used to get pretty
nervous before shows – in fact, the most nervous I’ve ever been was
before singing at the Apollo Theater in New York City in front of an
audience that would boo you off the stage if they didn’t like you.
Luckily, they liked me! Ever since then I haven’t really been nervous
before shows.

• Who are you influenced by musically?

I’ve been influenced by lots of different musicians, like Stevie
Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Angie Stone, Donny
Hathaway…I could go on all day!

• Is there any bands/artists that you would like to collaborate with
in the future?

I’d love to collaborate with Brian McKnight. I’ve always loved his
voice and his style of playing and writing.

• Where has been your favourite place to perform so far and why?

Hmm…I guess my favorite so far has been the Apollo, because it’s such a
historic place. So many famous people have gotten their start on that
stage, and it was such an honor to be up there following in their
footsteps. I’ve got a show coming up in my hometown (at the Lilac
Festival in Rochester, NY) this spring that I’m really looking forward
to as well. It will be so great getting to perform for all my friends
and family back home.

• You are currently studying at the Berklee College of Music, how is
that going?

Berklee is a great school, and I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m actually
taking this semester off to record and tour to promote my album,
though.

• When do you plan to release your album into the mainstream?

Hopefully in late March or early April of this year, if everything goes
according to schedule.

• What are your expectations towards chart success?

It’s hard as an independent artist to get radio airplay here in the
U.S., but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to get my music on the radio as
much as possible.

• What CD's do you currently have in your CD player?

A couple of Angie Stone CDs (Stone Love and Mahogany Soul) and
India.Arie’s album called Acoustic Soul. I’m really into neo-soul
stuff right now, and both of these artists are really terrific.

• How do you like to relax when you are not performing?

Since I’m relatively new to Boston, I love exploring the city. There’s
so much to see and do here. I also enjoy reading and shopping (there
are tons of great stores here!) and watching lots of movies.

• What are your ambitions for 2005?

By the end of the year I hope to have successfully released my album
and toured around the U.S. to bring my music to as many people as
possible. Who knows – maybe I’ll even come perform in the UK later
this year! I would love that.

• Do you have a message for your fans?

Thanks so much for your support! Please feel free to check out my
website – http://www.julietlloyd.com - for more info on my album and
upcoming shows. And thank you so much for having me here at
music-promotions.co.uk. It’s been a pleasure talking with you!

From this interview find out if there is any songs that Ben would like to cover, who he is playing to write with/for and what he would like on his rider plus more.

Thankyou to Ben for this music promotions interview.

Have you started working on your debut solo album? Yeah... I'm pretty much always writing... I've been collecting a lot of ideas, and now I'm just gonna' finish a lot of them up, write some new ones, and see what works best with what I'm wanting to become.

How are you inspired to write a song? are there any songs that you would like to cover? I have thought about it... there are a few songs that I think are pretty amazing that I grew up listening to. But in general, I think... unless you can improve upon it or bring a whole new flavor to it, it should probably just be left alone.

Are there any bands/artists that you would like write songs for? Have you written any songs for any other artists? Yeah... I've been writing with other bands, and singers, recently. Honestly, I got to write with Tony and Miles from "Fastball" and Tony and I are talking about getting together and writing with each other for each other, and I think that's gonna' be a blast for me.

Have you got any other projects lined up like acting perhaps? I am putting acting on hold for just a little bit longer... there are a few Managers, etc. in L.A. that have already aproached me to get the acting rolling, but I want to try and get my music going, first. (But yes, I would like to get back into acting, too)

Is acting something that you would like to get more involved in, or is your main focus your music career?
I wish I had read ahead... I kinda' answered that in the last one.

What would be your dream TV or film role? I think my views on acting are the same as my views on music. I would love to do a lot of Film/TV, etc. in my life, and have them all be different. I think that's the fun and the challenge. Some will do better than others, but hopefully they will all mean something special to someone.

You have a few shows lined up for the new year, are you nervous or exited about performing solo? (Good luck with your shows) Well, thank ya'. I'm both. I'm more nervous about being on a stage by myself playing guitar/keys and singing when I'm still pretty new to both as far as I'm concerned. I am also really excited to show what's brewing in my head to people. I think the nerves will thin out when I get a whole band together.

Where are you most looking forward to performing? Everywhere!!

What songs will you be performing? I wish I could tell you... but as far as I know, they may not even be written yet. I love that. (but it does add pressure)

What can your fans expect from your debut album? My Thoughts... I want my first album to be a glimpse into several sides of my brain. Some fun, some sad, some rock, some acoustic, I think the only way to know what goes on in my head is to hear what I'm working on. But production is a big part of it. It's not just the songs.

How would you describe your musical sound? I really have no idea. Let me know if you figure it out.

Have you got any plans to launch your music career over here in the UK? I've been talking to different people all over the world about it. Contacts I made during the band, etc. Everyone seems excited, but I think it's up to the fans more than anything. If they like the music, the rest will fall into place.

Have you got any plans for a tour? Where are your favourite places to perform live? There's no way to answer that truthfully. There are so many unbelievable things about performing in different places, that picking one would be impossible.

How long do you spend rehearsing before performing live for the first time? I'll let you know. I'm still in the writing phase. But I usually like to spend a full month rehearsing the stuff that I'm gonna' perform. Bare Minimum... 2 weeks for new material or a new set. A few days, if it's just one new song. (Bare Minimum)

Do you have a release date scheduled in for your album release? No... I just really decided to do this project a little while ago. I have been writing a lot, and I have recently been able to talk to a lot of the old Natural fans, and they just got me so excited about being able to show people what I've been doing, that I have just begun trying to refine it.

What three items would you include on a rider? Blue M&M's, 5 Down Pillows, and a personal Masseus.

Honestly... all I need is water, and power... I'll do the rest, if I have to.

What CD'S are in your CD player? Well... I just broke the CD player in my car, yesterday... I fed it "Ice T Presents" and I don't think it liked it. But I had been listening to "Dr. John - Gumbo", "Michael Jackson - Number Ones", "ELP - Trilogy", "Elton John - Greatest Hits" - "The Who - Quadrohenia", "Miles Davis - Kind of Blue", "Barenaked Ladies - Barenaked for the Holidays", and of course... "Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life" (It was a very long driving day)

What items do you always take on tour with you? MP3 player, Pillow, Computer, and Tylenol P.M.

What are you ambitions for 2005? I try not to aim... it limits the possibilities. ;-) But I guess it would basically be just to finish writing/recording this album, and be able to get it to everyone that wants it. I love the press side of things, I love the touring, I love the promotion... but my main goal is to get it out so that whoever wants to listen can.

How do you like to relax when you are not performing? Honestly... I don't like to relax. But I would say that playing and writing is relaxing to me. Sitting on a beach or a cruise for too long would drive me crazy (thus my beautiful tan...)

Where and when will you be performing next? That is changing daily. But as of right now... Kansas City, Kansas.

Do you have a message for your fans? I don't know how to thank you all for being a huge part of the best time I've ever had in my life. I hope we have many more years to come.
